A Voice From on High
John 1:14 – “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us…”
Among the personal effects of a serviceman killed in the South Pacific was a notebook in which he had written the following:
This is the time for a new revelation. People don’t think much about religion nowadays. But we need a voice from on high, brother, and I don’t mean maybe. This thing has gotten out of human ability to run. I’m no religious fanatic. But we are in a situation where something better than human brains has got to give us advice.
His words are but the symbol of the feeling what millions today have come to believe all over the world. Our only hope rests in power beyond man that can lead us out of these times of great controversy and confusion.
Should we go back in a time machine, I believe that the first Christmas would reflect the times of our day: A reckless world that stands in opposition to the righteous word of God. As the song writer of “O Holy Night” put it:
Long lay the word in sin and error pining,
‘Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
Voices from every side are beckoning for attention. Materialism has said, “Create more things. Invent more gadgets. Discover more machines. Science is the way out.” But science left unchecked leads to destruction. Politics has said, “Give power into my hands, and I will promise you order and peace.” Yet, politics has only taken power in our time and used it to hurt us.
With the advent of the internet, social media, podcasts, we hear a jumble of voices offering solution to our confusion. Our lives are embattled shores bombarded on many sides by the sound of many guns. We are hesitant to believe any promise because we are afraid of being led astray, and for good reason. Very few have our best interest at heart.
It was Gerald Kennedy who gave this thought-provoking statement:
We find ourselves with tremendous powers of communication, but no healing word to speak; tremendous systems of transportation, but nothing to transport that will make life whole again; tremendous powers of production, but no knowledge of how to produce the kind of life that will keep us from committing suicide…
It is all right to think of the world as a stage and each man playing his part, but there comes a time when we must ask ourselves who wrote the play. What kind of drama is it? And how is it going to end? …No man who considers his life… does so without being driven to religion.”
God gave an answer to men’s confusion. We read in John’s Gospel, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” God’s answer was Emmanuel, God with us! Your soul will always be restless until it finds its rest in God.
Matthew 17:5 reads, “While He yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is My beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased; hear ye Him.” What voices are you hearing today? The Word of God became incarnate. There is no higher truth or testimony of God. The only wise course is to follow Him. In Him alone is salvation. The way, the truth, the life, all things that man is looking for became known when God took on flesh and dwelt among men.
Respond to Him in faith. He invites all men to come to Him; receive Him as your personal Savior and you will find joy and peace with God. He invites all who are saved to experience greater service, greater satisfaction, and greater assurance as we abide with Him who dwelt among us. We need to hear from a voice from on high today – “…something better than human brains has got to give us advice.”
Hebrews 4:7 – “…To day if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts.”
